A tango top shares the embrace

A tango top has one requirement no other top has: it shares space with another person. Your partner’s hand sits on your back for four songs at a time. Your left arm rests along their shoulder. Whatever you wear has to work under that contact, not just look right standing still.

This is why a top that photographs beautifully can fail on the floor. Straps that slip in a raised-arm position. A neckline that gapes when you lean into the axis. A back detail that a hand catches on. None of it shows in a mirror.

How we cut a tango top

Straps are set at the angle the arm actually travels, not the angle that flatters a still shoulder. Halter necks are cut so the weight sits on the trapezius rather than the neck itself — a badly placed halter is fine for an hour and painful by midnight. Backs are kept clean where a hand rests: no hardware, no seam ridges, nothing to catch.

Crop lengths are cut to meet a high-waist skirt with overlap, so raising your arms doesn’t open a gap at the waist. That single measurement is the difference between a two-piece that reads as one silhouette and one that reads as two garments.

Velvet, sequin and stretch

Velvet holds shape and gives a dense, matte reading under low light. Sequin and metallic carry across a dark room and pair with a plain skirt when you want the eye to travel upward. Stretch fabrics move closest to the body and are the most forgiving across a long evening.

Made to order in our Istanbul atelier, one to two weeks in production. Order a top with a matching skirt and you have a co-ord; order it alone and it will work with what you already own.
